How to visit Skazka Canyon (Fairytale Canyon) in Kyrgyzstan

If you’re travelling around Kyrgyzstan and looking for somewhere different, colourful, and slightly off the typical tourist route, Skazka Canyon (Fairytale Canyon) deserves a spot on your itinerary. After visiting in summer 2025, I was blown away by its red rock formations, winding ridges, and strange shapes that look like they belong on Mars!

It’s miles apart from the lush greenery or snowy landscapes elsewhere in the country, and completely different from anywhere I’ve visited in Central Asia. In fact, it looks like it belongs in one of Utah’s epic national parks – specifically Bryce Canyon.

In this guide, I’ll show you exactly how to visit Skazka Canyon, including how to get there, what to expect, cost breakdown, hiking routes, tips, and whether it’s worth visiting. So let’s go!

About Skazka Canyon

Skazka Canyon, literally means “Fairytale Canyon” in Russian. It gets its name from the surreal formations created within this red sandstone landscape.

Over thousands of years, wind, rain, and erosion have created formations that supposedly look like dragons, castles, and even animals. If you use your imagination (like really really use it), it can feel like walking through a fantasy (or even fairytale) world.

Despite its accessibility, Skazka Canyon still feels wild and peaceful compared to other spots in the region. The area spreads out beyond the trails, making it’s easy to escape other people and explore quiet viewpoints and hidden ridges.

Where is Skazka Canyon

Skazka Canyon is located on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul Lake in eastern Kyrgyzstan. It sits between the small villages of Tosor and Kaji-Say, around 120km west of Karakol and roughly 260km from Bishkek.

Despite its remote feel, the canyon is positioned a short drive from the main road that circles Issyk-Kul. This makes it one of Kyrgyzstan’s most accessible natural attractions – and an easy stop if you’re travelling around the lake.

Many travellers visit while driving between Karakol and the south shore towns, or as part of a wider Issyk-Kul road trip – often combining with visits to Jeti Oguz or Barskoon Waterfall. (See more things to do near Skazka Canyon below).

How to get to Skazka Canyon

Since the main road connects all major towns along Issyk-Kul, getting to Skazka Canyon is relatively simple and transport options are flexible. Most people will be travelling from Bishkek (the capital), Karakol or Bokonbaevo. Use the Google Maps location here.

I’d previously read that you need a 4WD vehicle to reach the entrance, but in my opinion you don’t, as it’s just a dirt track. Though be cautious if you’re driving after rainfall.

We arrived in a small little Toyota which was fine.

Bishkek to Skazka Canyon

From Bishkek, the journey takes around 4-5 hours by car. Most of the route follows paved roads, passing through scenic mountain landscapes and small villages.

Marshrutkas regularly run from Bishkek to Karakol or Bokonbaevo. Ask the driver to drop you near Tosor village, which is the closest point to the canyon entrance. From there, you can either walk, hitchhike or arrange a taxi for the final few kilometres.

Renting a car in Bishkek gives you the most freedom and allows you to combine Skazka with other things to do nearby. I also recommend that you stay somewhere nearby if you’re travelling that distance!

This is the main road beside Issyk-Kul lake. It’s a mixture of paved and dirt tracks, but it’s largely smooth.

Karakol to Skazka Canyon

If you’re based in Karakol, Skazka Canyon makes an easy day trip. The drive takes around 2 hours along the lake’s southern road.

Marshrutkas run frequently towards Bokonbaevo or Bishkek. They run from the southern bus station on Toktogul Street (near the stadium) for around 200 KGS per person. Once again, ask to be dropped near Tosor village.

A taxi to Skazka Canyon costs around 3000 som per car, therefore it makes sense to share.

If you’re really on a budget or up for adventure, many travellers hitchhike this route. It’s relatively simple as it’s a popular road with both locals and tourists.

Bokonbaevo to Skazka Canyon

Bokonbaevo is the closest town to Skazka Canyon, located just 30-40 minutes away. Much like Karakol, you can easily take a taxi or hitchhike to the entrance.

Bokonbaevo is also a great base if you want to combine your visit with eagle hunting experiences or other cultural activities around the south shore of Issyk-Kul.

What to expect at Skazka Canyon

After you drive up the dirt track, pay the 50 som entrance fee and arrive at Skazka Canyon, you might think that landscape looks surprisingly small from the car park…

But once you start walking, you quickly realise how much there is to explore. The red and orange sandstone formations stretch far beyond the main paths, with winding ridges, hidden viewpoints, and quiet corners where you can escape the crowds.

In terms of facilities – they’re basic but improving. Near the entrance, you’ll find:

  • Basic toilets
  • Small food and drink stalls in peak season
  • Parking areas
  • Souvenir stands
  • Activities like archery

After this point, there are no shops, water points, or shade, so it’s important to bring everything you need before entering.

I spent around 2 hours exploring the whole area; the majority of that is spent hiking and taking photos.

Skazka Canyon Hike

Whilst Skazka Canyon is best explored freely and without a plan, there are three official trails which lead away from the parking lot:

  1. Castle: Located 0.5km away from the entrance, take the left-most turn as you enter the area. In my opinion this is the most striking feature of the area.
  2. Colourful Hills: Located 0.2km away from the entrance, you head slightly to the left and into the middle of the complex.
  3. Panorama: Located 0.9km away from the entrance and at 1830m elevation, this viewpoint overlooks more of the area.

Whilst the trails are not explicitly marked, the walking paths are relatively clear. You can easily link each of the three stops together and hike even further to discover your own viewpoints.

The terrain is generally easy to walk on, but some areas are sandy, crumbly, or steep when climbing viewpoints. I was grateful for my Salomon XT-6s trail-runners which are so versatile when I travel.

When to visit Skazka Canyon

Firstly, when does Skazka Canyon open?

There are no strict opening hours, but the canyon is generally accessible from early morning until sunset. Most travellers arrive during the middle of the day, especially in summer, when tour groups pass through the area.

I recommend avoiding the midday heat and tour groups. Try for early morning or late afternoon when the canyon is far more atmospheric when the light is low, and the colours shift constantly as the sun moves.

Best time to visit Skazka Canyon

The best time of year to visit Skazka Canyon is between May and October, when the weather is warm and the roads are accessible. During these months, the south shore of Issyk-Kul Lake is generally dry and sunny, making it ideal for exploring on foot.

During peak summer (June-August), the daylight hours are longer but you’ll also find more visitors. Whereas, the shoulder months (May and September), are good alternatives with cooler temperatures and smaller crowds.

Winter visits are possible and can be beautiful with snow on the red rock, but access can sometimes be more difficult. Sometimes you can even get in for free!

NOTE: Avoid visiting after it has rained, trails are much less enjoyable.

FAQs

How much is Skazka Canyon entry?

One of the best things about Skazka Canyon is how affordable it is to visit. There’s a small entrance gate near the main parking area, where you’ll pay the fee before exploring.

The entrance fee is 50 KGS per person (roughly $0.50 USD). It’s cash only, so make sure you bring small notes if you’re travelling around Issyk Kul. Though I’ve heard that during winter, sometimes there’s no fee (don’t quote me on this).

Is Skazka Canyon worth visiting?

Absolutely. While it’s not as dramatic as some of Kyrgyzstan’s mountain landscapes, Skazka Canyon is one of the most unique and photogenic places.

The colours, unusual rock formations, and freedom to explore make it feel different from the country’s typical alpine scenery. The only other time I saw red rock in Kyrgyzstan was in Jeti Oguz!

If you’re already travelling around Issyk Kul, it’s a no-brainer. And if you’re short on time in Kyrgyzstan, Skazka still gives you a glimpse into the country’s wild, surreal landscapes without needing serious planning or effort.

Can you camp in Skazka Canyon?

If you’re hoping to photograph sunrise or sunset over the red rock formations or are simply struggling with the lack of accommodation nearby, you might be wondering if camping at Skazka Canyon is an option.

Whilst there are no official campsites, facilities or guidance, wild camping at Skazka Canyon is possible (many independent travellers do it). You just need to be fully self-sufficient with enough water, food, and warm layers.

Kyrgyzstan is generally relaxed when it comes to camping, and the landscape at the canyon means there are plenty of quiet spots where you can set up a tent without being disturbed. Just arrive late in the day and pitch further from the entrance – avoid fragile formations, and leave no trace, as this is a protected natural area.

How long do you need?

Most people spend 1.5 to 3 hours exploring Skazka Canyon, which is enough time to walk through the main formations, climb viewpoints, and take photos. Plan your visit based on your specific needs!

If you’re short on time, you can see the highlights in about an hour. The most famous section (Valley of Castles) is relatively close to the entrance and easy to reach.

However, you could easily spend half a day if you enjoy wandering, photography, or quiet viewpoints (and want to see a sunset). The canyon is larger than it first appears, and there are plenty of side trails where you’ll barely see another person.

What to pack for Skazka Canyon

Since there are pretty much no facilities at Skazka Canyon, it’s important to come prepared. The landscape is dry, exposed, and surprisingly rugged in places.

Make sure you bring:

  • Water & Snacks: I brought 2 litres to cover me for the journey as well as exploring.
  • Sun protection: This includes hat, sunscreen, sunglasses
  • Camera & phone: Make sure they have enough battery
  • Weather appropriate clothing: If you’re visiting in summer, shorts and a t-shirt should be fine. But consider light layers if the wind picks up or a waterproof if it might rain.
  • Comfortable walking shoes or trainers: the terrain is can be dry and crumbly in places or slippery if it’s rained.
  • Walking poles: Some of the trails can be slippery so poles offer extra support. I personally didn’t use them.
  • Camping gear (optional): If you’re planning to stay overnight you’ll need tent, sleeping bag, mat, warm clothes and enough supplies.

  • Visit early or late in the day: The light is better, temperatures are cooler, and you’ll avoid the midday tour crowds.
  • Wear proper shoes: The sand and loose rock can be slippery, especially when climbing viewpoints.
  • Bring cash: The entrance fee and local stalls don’t accept cards.
  • Allow time to explore: The canyon looks small from the entrance, but there are many side trails and hidden viewpoints.
  • Check the weather: Wind and heat can be intense in summer, while spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions. Avoid rains.

Tour vs Independently for Skazka Canyon

If you’re wondering the best way to visit Skazka Canyon, then I’ll almost always be swaying towards doing it independently.

Part of the beauty of the area is the freedom to explore and get away from people! So in my opinion, it defeats the point.

That being said, Fairytale Canyon is utterly stunning and worth visiting! So if you’re short on time; not confident on public transport ;or are travelling solo – there are tours available to visit Skazka Canyon.

Many accommodations in Karakol, Bokonbaevo and even Bishkek will offer these as well as local tour agencies. The Kyrgyz CBT can also be very helpful. Otherwise you can book daytrips with activities through GetYourGuide or Advantour.

Where to eat near Skazka Canyon

As of 2025, there really aren’t many options for food near Skazka Canyon. Therefore, my biggest recommendation is to plenty of bring snacks with you.

Otherwise, I hope you have your own vehicle so you can drive somewhere else for food!

HOWEVER, your best option nearby is located right on the main road, next to the turning for Skazka Canyon. There is a cafe called Skazka Park which serves food and drinks.

Things to do near Skazka Canyon

Skazka is usually visited as part of a wider trip around Issyk Kul, and there are plenty of great stops nearby:

  • Bokonbaevo: One of the most popular stops. It’s known for traditional eagle hunting demonstrations, where you can learn about this ancient nomadic practice still preserved in southern Kyrgyzstan.
  • Beach Day: Near Skazka you can relax on the quiet southern shores of Issyk Kul. There are several beautiful remote beaches that feel like you could be experiencing your Euro summer!
  • Issyk Kul Yurt Camps: Experience local nomadic life by staying in one of the many yurt camps nearby.
  • Barskoon Gorge: Further east of Skazka, this massive gorge has incredible nature and the Barskoon Waterfall.
  • Jeti Oguz: Home to the seven Bulls and Broken Heart Rock, this is another of Kyrgyzstan’s most impressive red-rock formations.
  • Karakol: Located a couple of hours east, Karakol is the nearest backpacker hub to Skazka. From here you can explore even more nature and do the famous Ala Kul trek.

Where to stay near Skazka Canyon

If you don’t feel like camping at the canyon, the closest accommodations to Skazka Canyon are probably all of the yurt camps and resorts that are popping up by Issyk Kul.

However I would say you have three options for deciding where to stay: Tosor, Bokonbaevo or Karakol – here are my top picks:

  • Tosor Yurt Camp (Tosor): A yurt camp on a beach! Need I say more? The town of Tosor is only 4km from the canyon which makes it very convenient.
  • Guest House Akbermet (Bokonbaevo): This is where I stayed. Ideal if you’re looking for a base to do other activities around the region.
  • Karakol: As the largest town ‘nearby’, there are several solid accommodations options here, but it’s a bit further from the canyon.
