Hiking Wli Waterfalls: Ghana’s Highest Waterfall

Tucked away in the lush Volta Region near the Togo border, Wli Waterfalls is best known as the highest waterfall in Ghana. But what makes it memorable isn’t just its height – it’s the whole experience. Forest trails, river crossings, bat colonies, swimming beneath the falls, and an (optional) awesome hike make Wli Waterfall far more than a quick roadside viewpoint.

Many visitors only see the Lower Falls, which are impressive enough on their own (and easy to reach). But if you’re up for a challenge, the Upper Falls hike adds jungle scenery, viewpoints, and a much more rewarding sense of adventure. Plus you can even cross the border into Togo (without a VISA)!

So whether you’re visiting as a day trip or staying nearby, Wli is one of the best things to do in eastern Ghana and a great break from city travel.

In this guide, I’ll cover exactly how to visit Wli Waterfalls, the difference between the upper and lower falls, what the Wli Waterfall hike is really like, costs, and practical tips to help you plan your visit.

About Wli Waterfalls

Wli Waterfalls (also known as Agumatsa Falls) are the highest waterfalls in Ghana, standing at approximately 80m tall (260 feet).

They’re located in the small village of Wli, along Ghana’s eastern corridor – the land between Lake Volta (world’s largest artificial reservoir) and the Togo border.

What makes Wli especially interesting is that there are actually two separate waterfall experiences:

  • Lower Wli Falls: the main and easiest section to visit, reached by a short walk through the forest.
  • Upper Wli Falls: reached by one of two longer, more demanding hikes with steeper trails.

Most visitors stop at the lower falls, but hikers and more adventurous travellers often continue to the upper section.

The waterfalls sit within the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary, which is also known for its huge colony of fruit bats, especially around the lower falls area.

How to get to Wli

Getting to Wli Waterfalls in eastern Ghana is possible independently, though it takes a little planning since the enormous Lake Volta separates it from the rest of the country!

Having just finished seeing elephants in Mole National Park, I spent a lot of time figuring the best way to get to Wli.

For most journeys, the main closest transit point to Wli is the town of Hohoe.

Accra to Wli

This is the most popular route. From Accra, the journey usually takes 4.5 to 6 hours depending on traffic and transport.

Your main options are:

  • Drive yourself / private driver (easiest and best for flexibility).
  • Tro tro or bus to Hohoe, then taxi onward (explained below).
  • Organised day trip (possible, but would not recommend).

You can get a tro-tro from Tudu bus station, near Makola Market. If you’re not near the station, get a taxi using Uber or Bolt. From Tudu, we found a ride directly to Hohoe (100 GHS + baggage), but another alternative is getting a bus to Ho, changing there and going to Hohoe.

Tudu bus terminal

To my surprise, our bus went beyond the town of Golokwati towards Fodome. You can ask the driver to stop in Fodome, then get a mototaxi from there to Wli. This will avoid you re-tracing your steps.

If you go all the way to Hohoe, you can get another tro-tro to Wli itself (20 GHS). Given the short distance, I’d recommend a taxi as the tro-tro rarely fills up fast.

Tamale to Wli

After taking the overnight bus from Tamale to Accra, I later found out that the eastern route is possible (i.e. from the north). It’s also probably quicker than going down to Accra, and then back up towards Wli…

There are ferries that run across the lake such as from Agordeke to Kpando or Dodoikope to Dambai. There are potentially more ferries – so ask locals.

Otherwise, you can get a series of tro-tros around the north-east of the lake. The roads have improved a lot in recent years (more-so than the south of the lake). However both of these methods will involve several changes.

How to visit Wli Waterfall

Before starting the trail to Wli Waterfall, you will first need to visit the visitor centre in the village (located here).

Here you will discuss your plans at reception (i.e. which route to do), get a guide and pay the associated entrance fee. Then, you’ll need to provide your personal details and sign a form – presumably so they know who’s on trail.

A local guide is often included or strongly encouraged, particularly for the upper falls routes. I tried explaining that I didn’t need one (but failed…) – but in hindsight, having a guide is worth it. Firstly, both Upper Falls routes aren’t the easiest trails to follow, plus your guide will share information about the area, and potentially grab you some fruit from the jungle – we ate so many avocados!

Wli Waterfalls Opening Hours

Wli Waterfalls is generally visited during daylight hours, with most people arriving between morning and mid-afternoon.

I’d recommend aiming for early morning or late morning so you avoid the hottest part of the day and give yourself enough time if hiking to the upper falls.

Adventurous travellers

I completed the Togo Loop route which covers sections from both the other hikes. If you’re fit and adventurous, this is absolutely worth it, and was one of the most unique hikes I did in West Africa!

Whichever hike you decide, you can walk directly from the Wli Waterfalls visitor centre to the trailhead of your hike.

Lower Wli Waterfall (Easy Walk)

The Lower Wli Falls are where most visitors begin, and for many people, this is the main attraction.

Wli Lower Waterfalls is easily accessible from the entrance, following a short woodland trail that usually takes around 30-45 minutes each way depending on pace. The path is straightforward and suitable for most travellers with a basic level of fitness.

Along the way, you’ll cross small bridges, pass through lush greenery, and hear plenty of wildlife around you. One of the most memorable parts is the huge colony of fruit bats often seen hanging in the trees near the falls.

When you arrive, the waterfall itself is incredible! A tall cascade dropping into a pool surrounded by cliffs and forest. It feels cooler here, and the setting is a welcome escape from Ghana’s heat.

Swimming is possible, though the water can be cold and conditions depend on the season. Make sure to watch out for large rocks under the surface which are easy to stub your toes on (speaking from experience)!

Once you’re done enjoying the waterfall, you can retrace your steps via the same path back to the entrance.

Upper Wli Waterfall (Direct Route)

If you want more of a challenge than the lower falls, but don’t fancy the full Togo Loop, the Upper Falls direct route is a good middle ground.

This trail heads straight towards the upper section of Wli Waterfalls rather than looping around the ridge. It’s still a proper hike, with steeper climbs, forest paths, and river crossings, but it’s shorter and less demanding than the full border loop.

The route begins from the same general trail near the visitor centre, before gradually climbing through dense woodland. Expect uneven ground, exposed roots, rocky sections, and plenty of humidity. It’s not a technical hike, but it can feel tough in the midday heat.

As you gain elevation, the scenery becomes more dramatic and quieter than the lower route. You’ll hear birds, insects, rushing water, and occasionally spot butterflies moving through the trees.

Eventually, you’ll reach the Upper Wli Falls, the more secluded part of the waterfall system. It feels wilder and less visited than the lower falls, with fewer people and a stronger sense of having earned the view.

You can usually swim here too, and it’s a brilliant place to cool off before beginning the descent.

We had the whole Upper Wli Falls to ourselves when we first arrived!

After spending time at the upper falls, you’ll retrace the route back down, passing via the lower falls trail again.

Togo Loop Hike (Best Route)

For those seeking an adventure (and the best views), the Togo Loop is the best option. The total hike distance is around 16km.

Soon after the start of the hike, there is a small path veering to the right. This is followed by a steep incline for the next few kilometres as you make your way up and around the edge of the ridge.

Togo Loop wli waterfalls ghana

You will have epic views both in front and behind you. Behind, you can see the small village of Wli as well as Hohoe in the distance, then in front of you is Togo and Wli Waterfalls (when they come into sight).

You will continue following the ridge around the edge of the waterfall, eventually losing sight and going behind it – and into Togo! It’s a very unofficial border crossing! There are no officials, no stamps, and you quite literally jump across a river into another country! For those people who are counting countries – you can tell me if this one counts!

Togo loop wli waterfalls ghana

As you wander through the jungles of Togo behind the falls, you will see a village or two, and perhaps bump into some people doing the hike from the other direction.

Eventually you will cross behind the waterfall, and make your way down to the Upper Falls. This is the quieter of the two sections of Wli Falls.

After some time spent enjoying Wli Upper Falls, you will continue uphill again… Sadly, there’s no direct route down to the lower falls. It’s a very roundabout route to the Lower Falls from the Upper falls!

Once you’ve finished exploring Wli Lower Falls, you can make your way back to the visitor centre to finish the Loop. This last section is the same as the two other hikes, since they all return from the lower falls.

What to pack

  • Hiking shoes: Given the uphill sections of both Upper Falls hikes, having comfortable hiking shoes is essential. Especially if you go during wet season! You can get away with trainers if you’re just hiking to Lower Wli Falls.
  • Swimsuit and towel: Swimming under these incredible falls was one of the highlights of my time in Ghana. Even if you don’t plan on swimming, having a towel is still handy.
  • Water: It’s a sweaty hike, so you need to stay hydrated. Though you can often buy drinks at the small shop at the Lower Falls (but don’t rely on this).
  • Snacks: The Togo loop hike and Upper Wli Falls are both several hours. Bring a few snacks to keep your energy levels up.
  • Cash: For your entrance fee and any tip for your guide.
  • Waterproof bag: Protect your valuables and be sure bring a waterproof bag, especially if there’s a risk of rain! I never hike in Ghana without
  • Camera: The views are stunning, so bring something to take a few snaps with!

FAQs

What is the best time to visit Wli Waterfalls?

The dry season is easier for hiking, while the rainy season often means stronger waterfall flow and greener scenery. Early mornings are best year-round.

  • Nov-March (recommended): easiest hiking
  • Apr-June: greener scenery
  • Rainy season: strongest falls but muddier trails

How long to spend at Wli Waterfalls

How much time you need at Wli Waterfalls really depends on whether you’re just seeing the lower falls or planning to hike all the way to the upper section.

If you’re only visiting the Lower Wli Falls, you can comfortably do it as a half-day trip. This involves 1-2 hours hiking (depending on pace), plus 30-60 minutes at the waterfall itself.

So in total, around 2-3 hours on site is usually enough.

If you’re including the upper falls, you’ll want to set aside a full day. 3-6 hours total for the hike, plus extra time for breaks, lunch, swimming, and exploring.

Can you swim at Wli Waterfalls?

Yes, you can swim at both the lower falls and upper falls. In fact, you can even go under the falls (in the less powerful section). The water can be cold but it feels super refreshing after a sweaty walk!

Of course, the weather conditions and water levels will impact the water flow, but even during the dry season Wli Waterfalls continues to flow.

How hard is the Wli Waterfall hike?

The lower falls hike is easy to moderate and suitable for most visitors including novice hikers and children.

Both Upper Falls hikes are more challenging, with steeper trails, and a longer walking time. Only tackle these if you’re used to longer walks and walking in humid conditions.

Do you need a guide for Wli Waterfalls?

Guides at Wli Waterfall are usually strongly recommended, especially for the Upper Falls route. They provide them at the visitor centre on arrival.

Similarly, for the Lower Falls, you’ll likely be recommended a guide. In my opinion you don’t need one if you have GPS…

From personal experience, they’ll try to convince you that you need a guide for everything. You should have a guide for the upper loop, especially since you’re crossing a border. For the lower route, try to convince them otherwise.

NOTE: If you do take a guide, remember to give them a tip.

Do you need a VISA or Passport for the Togo Loop?

No, you don’t need any documents to do any of the Wli Waterfalls hikes.

How do I get to Wli from Accra?

From Accra, travel usually takes 4.5 to 6 hours by car or public transport via Hohoe.

Can you visit in one day?

Yes – Wli is possible as a (long) day trip from Accra, but I’d recommend staying overnight in Hohoe or Wli to enjoy it properly.

Should I hike the Upper Falls or Lower Falls (or Togo Loop)?

If you know me, I’ll always be bias towards the longest and most adventurous hike – which is the Togo Loop. This covers both Upper and Lower Wli Falls, and even involves a discrete border crossing!

Meanwhile, the lower falls is best for casual visitors (including families) as well as those who are short on time! That said, it’s still very scenic and rewarding!

The upper falls (direct route) is more adventurous than the lower falls, but shorter and easier than the Togo Loop. It’s a great option if you want a real hike without committing to 16km, and want to avoid the crowds.

Is Wli Waterfalls Worth Visiting?

Absolutely – Wli Waterfalls is one of the best nature experiences in Ghana.

If you’ve spent time in cities like Accra or Kumasi, Wli feels like a refreshing change of pace. The air is cooler, the scenery is greener, and the whole experience feels more adventurous than many of the country’s standard attractions.

What makes it worth visiting is that it felt genuinely adventurous as well as scenic! You’re walking through forest trails, crossing streams, hearing wildlife around you, and finishing beneath a huge waterfall where you can often swim.

It also works for different travel styles:

  • Casual visitors can do the lower falls in a short visit.
  • Active travellers can hike to the upper falls for a tougher challenge.
  • Road trippers / backpackers can use it as a highlight of the Volta Region.

Where to stay in Wli

Whilst there currently aren’t many options on Booking and other sites for accommodation in Wli. There are actually a surprising amount!

  • Wli Waterfalls Inn: I stayed here. It’s quiet, the owners are friendly and it’s very good value! In my opinion, this is the best place to stay if you want to explore Wli and the local area.
  • Big Foot Safari Lodge: If you want something a bit more comfortable and westernised, Big Foot is the place to stay. It also offers rooms with a view of the mountains!
  • Camping at Wli Waterfalls: I didn’t realise this was an option until too late, but you can book with Francis (+233 50 375 2401). I can’t really think of a more scenic spot to camp!

More things to do in Wli

While most people visit purely for the waterfall, Wli village and the surrounding area are worth slowing down for, especially if you stay overnight.

  • Wli Caves: One of the lesser-known attractions near Wli is the local cave system hidden in the hills nearby. These caves are usually visited with a local guide and can add another adventurous activity to your stay. Expect short hikes, rocky entrances, and a more off-the-beaten-path feel than the main waterfall trail.
  • Camping: Some local stays and community areas offer camping or simple overnight setups. Falling asleep surrounded by forest sounds and waking up near the mountains is a very different experience to Ghana’s cities. You can even camp at Wli Waterfalls!
  • Hike Mount Afadja: This is Ghana’s highest point, and a surprisingly easy hike! The views aren’t as good as Wli Waterfalls, but it’s worth visiting if you want to say you’re the highest person in Ghana!
  • Hike Mt Gemi: A little south of Wli, Mt Gemi is another popular and scenic hike.
  • Lake Volta: Given you’re in the Volta Region, it would be a real shame not to head over towards the lake itself to relax and enjoy the views.
