Best Time to Visit Hong Kong: A Month-by-Month Guide

Hong Kong is a year-round destination, but the time of year you visit can still make a noticeable difference to your trip. The city itself doesn’t change dramatically with the seasons, but the weather does.

I’ve spent more than a month exploring Hong Kong across multiple trips. So in this guide, I’ll break down what each season is actually like, which months are best for different types of trips and what you can expect if you’re visiting outside the most popular periods.

When is the best time to visit Hong Kong?

For most travellers, the best time to visit Hong Kong is from October to December.

This is when you’ll generally find some of the city’s most comfortable conditions, with lower humidity, less rainfall and plenty of good days for outdoor exploring!

If I had to pick one month, I’d go for November. Average daytime temperatures are around 24°C, while humidity is significantly lower than during the summer months. It’s warm enough to enjoy being outside without the intense heat and stickiness of July or August.

That said, there’s no perfect month for everyone. March and April can be good if you prefer spring temperatures, while January and February are cooler and generally drier.

Hong Kong Weather by Season

Hong Kong has four distinct seasons. Though I like to think of it more like cool/dry vs hot/wet.

Spring in Hong Kong: March to May

Spring brings warmer temperatures and increasing humidity, with rainfall becoming more frequent as the season comes to an end. March and April can be a good compromise for sightseeing and hiking, although weather becomes less predictable towards May.

One thing to be aware of is that spring weather can be quite changeable. You may get warm pleasant days most of the time, but rain and cloudy conditions become increasingly common as you move towards May.

Summer in Hong Kong: June to August

Summer is the most challenging season if you want to spend lots of time outdoors. It’s hot, humid and wet, with June to August accounting for some of Hong Kong’s highest rainfall. August is particularly wet, averaging around 445mm of rain.

This doesn’t mean summer is a bad time to visit! You’ll still have plenty of opportunities to explore the city, and the warmer weather can be appealing if beaches are part of your plans. However, heavy rain and tropical cyclones can disrupt activities.

Make sure to bring a rain jacket!

Autumn in Hong Kong: September to November

Autumn is arguably the sweet spot for visiting Hong Kong. September can still very much like summer, but conditions gradually become more comfortable as October and November arrive, with falling humidity and much less rainfall.

October and November are particularly good months if you want to combine city sightseeing with some of Hong Kong’s hiking!

Winter in Hong Kong: December to February

Hong Kong’s winter is mild by European standards, making it a nice time for a city break. It’s one of the driest times of year, and the cooler temperatures can make walking around the city much more comfortable.

The downside is that winter can sometimes feel cool, cloudy or grey. If you’re mainly interested in sightseeing, food and shopping though, winter is a great option.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

If you’re planning your trip around a particular month, the differences in Hong Kong’s weather are worth knowing.

Average daytime temperatures range from around 19°C in January to 32°C in July, while rainfall varies dramatically throughout the year.

Here’s what you can generally expect each month:

January is one of the coolest and driest months in Hong Kong, with average daytime highs of around 19°C and just 33mm of rain.

It’s a good month for sightseeing and exploring the city on foot, although you’ll want a light jacket for cooler mornings and evenings.

Depending on the year, Chinese New Year can fall in late January, bringing colourful celebrations, but also busier periods and higher demand for accommodation.

February is similar to January, although slightly warmer and a little wetter. Average highs are around 19°C, making it comfortable for walking around the city.

Chinese New Year often falls in February, although exact dates change each year. If your trip coincides with the celebrations, expect plenty of atmosphere, but also large crowds and some changes to opening hours.

March marks the start of spring, with average highs reaching around 22°C.

Rainfall increases compared with winter months, but it can still be a good time for sightseeing and hiking before the heat and humidity really build.

Easter sometimes falls in March, so it’s worth checking the dates if you’re planning a trip around the holiday period.

April is notably warmer, with average highs of around 26°C. Rainfall also increases, and humidity becomes more noticeable.

If you’re visiting for hiking, I’d still consider April a good option, but be prepared for changeable weather.

Easter can also fall in April, while the Ching Ming Festival is held around this time and can make some parts of the city busier.

May is when Hong Kong starts to feel properly subtropical. Average daytime temperatures reach around 29°C, while rainfall jumps significantly.

It’s still possible to have a great trip, but heat, humidity and rain become much more of a factor.

The Dragon Boat Festival sometimes falls in May (sometimes in June too), and the start of Hong Kong’s typhoon season is another reason to keep an eye on the forecast.

June is hot, humid and pretty wet. Average highs are around 31°C and Hong Kong receives almost 500mm of rain on average, making it one of the wettest months of the year.

If you’re planning lots of outdoor activities, June wouldn’t be my first choice.

That said, the warmer weather is good for swimming, and the Dragon Boat Festival can bring exciting races if you visit at the right time.

July is one of the hottest months, with average highs of around 32°C. Although rainfall is slightly lower than June, it remains very wet.

Once again typhoons and heavy showers are a consideration. Leave some flexibility in your itinerary for the weather.

Just like the previous couple of months, August is hot, humid and wet with average highs of around 31°C.

It’s also another month when tropical cyclone activity is a genuine consideration.

September still feels very much like summer in Hong Kong. Average highs remain above 30°C and rainfall is still common.

However, conditions generally start to improve and become steadier towards the end of the month.

October is when I’d start looking seriously at Hong Kong for an outdoor-focused trip.

Temperatures become more comfortable, averaging around 28°C during the day, while rainfall drops considerably compared with September. The second half of the month is particularly appealing for hiking and exploring the islands.

The Mid-Autumn Festival can also fall in September or October depending on the year.

November is my pick for the best month to visit Hong Kong. Average daytime temperatures are around 25°C, rainfall is low and humidity is considerably more comfortable than during the summer.

It’s an excellent month for combining city sightseeing with hiking, beaches and trips to Hong Kong’s outlying islands. With its reliable and dry weather, November is my favourite time to visit Hong Kong!

December is cooler than November, with average highs of around 20°C and very little rainfall.

It’s a particularly good month if you’re more interested in sightseeing, food and exploring the city than swimming or beach time.

Christmas also brings a festive atmosphere, with decorations, light displays and seasonal events across the city.

Pack a light jacket, particularly for evenings.

Best time to visit Hong Kong for different activities

The best time to visit Hong Kong depends partly on what you want to do there.

If you want to spend most of your time exploring neighbourhoods, eating and shopping, the weather matters less than it does if you want to hike, visit the islands or spend time outdoors.

Best time to visit Hong Kong for hiking

Whilst trails are open year-round, I think October to April is generally the best period for hiking in Hong Kong. Temperatures are comfortable and rainfall is much lower than during the summer.

I particularly recommend October, November, March and April as they’re slightly warmer than the winter months!

Best time to visit Hong Kong for beaches

If beaches and swimming are a priority, May to October offers the warmest weather and warmest seas. The downside is that this overlaps with Hong Kong’s wetter season (particularly June to September).

Therefore, it’s a balance between finding warm temperatures and avoiding the rain clouds!

October is generally a pleasant balance. The sea should still be warm enough for swimming, while the weather is generally much more pleasant for exploring afterwards.

However, I have still been to several beaches in Hong Kong in November and December. On sunny days it’s lovely, on overcast days it can be a bit cooler.

Best time to visit Hong Kong for sightseeing

For general sightseeing, October to December is hard to beat. The cooler and drier weather makes walking between neighbourhoods, viewpoints and attractions much more bearable.

Winter is another good option, particularly if you’re more interested in food, shopping and indoor attractions.

Best time to visit Hong Kong for festivals and culture

Hong Kong has festivals and cultural events throughout the year, so there’s no single best month if this is your priority.

Chinese New Year is one of the biggest celebrations, so I would pick that if I had to choose one. But the Dragon Boat Festival is an altogether different experience!

Just keep in mind that major festivals and public holidays can also mean busier attractions and higher accommodation prices.

Things to consider when deciding when to visit Hong Kong

Weather isn’t the only thing worth considering when choosing when to visit Hong Kong.

Your budget, tolerance for crowds, and whether there’s a particular festival or event can also influence which dates make the most sense for you.

Crowds and public holidays

Hong Kong can be busy at any time of year, but major festivals, public holidays and big events can make popular attractions noticeably busier and accommodation more expensive.

Chinese New Year, which usually falls in January or February, is the biggest celebration in Hong Kong, with festivities taking place across the city.

On the other hand, don’t assume that visiting outside of so-called peak season means you’ll have the city to yourself. It’s a major international destination year-round, so its most popular attractions can be busy regardless!

Typhoons and travel disruption

If you’re travelling between May and November, it’s worth being aware of the possibility of tropical cyclones.

A typhoon doesn’t necessarily mean your holiday is ruined. Hong Kong is well-prepared for bad weather, and there are plenty of indoor activities to keep you entertained!

The bigger issue is that ferries, hiking plans, and sometimes flights can be postponed when conditions are unsafe.

Prices

As I’ve mentioned, there’s not one obvious period where prices are cheaper.

If your dates are flexible, compare accommodation and flight prices across a few different weeks.

Summer can sometimes offer better value, but only choose it for the weather trade-off if you’re comfortable with the heat, humidity and potential heavy rain.

FAQs

What is the best month to visit Hong Kong?

November is my pick for the best month to visit Hong Kong. The weather is warm but comfortable. Rain is low, and humidity is much more manageable than summer.

It’s also an excellent time for hiking and exploring Hong Kong’s islands. My first ever Hong Kong trip was in November and we only had one cloudy day!

When is the worst time to visit Hong Kong?

There isn’t really a single “worst” time to visit. June to August would be my least preferred period if you have complete flexibility, simply because of the combination of heat, humidity and heavy rainfall.

However, summer can still work well if you’re comfortable with the weather and want to take advantage of potentially lower prices and smaller crowds.

How many days do you need in Hong Kong?

I’d recommend at least five days for a first trip to Hong Kong. This gives you enough time to explore the main neighbourhoods and attractions without rushing.

If you have a week, even better! My 1-week Hong Kong itinerary can help you with that one!

If you’re still not sure how long to spend, check out my guide on how many days to spend in Hong Kong.

Is Hong Kong rainy in summer?

Simply put, yes. Summer is Hong Kong’s wettest period, with particularly high rainfall from June to August. Rain often comes as heavy showers or thunderstorms rather than constant drizzle, so you can still get good weather between downpours.

Is Hong Kong cold in winter?

Hong Kong isn’t cold by European standards.

Winter is generally mild, although cold spells can make Hong Kong feel surprisingly chilly, particularly in January and February. I’d bring layers rather than a heavy winter coat.

And there’s plenty of shopping to be done if you don’t have what you need!

When is typhoon season in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong’s typhoon season officially runs from May to November, although tropical cyclones are most common between July and September.

Typhoons can bring heavy rain and strong winds and may temporarily affect ferries, flights and outdoor attractions

Can you visit Hong Kong during rainy season?

Absolutely. The rainy season doesn’t mean it rains all day, every day. Instead there are usually downpours lasting from a few minutes to a few hours. There are still plenty of intervals for exploring!

Even if it does rain a lot, Hong Kong has plenty of indoor attractions, covered shopping areas, restaurants and excellent public transport, so rain doesn’t have to derail your trip.

It’s not so good if you want to hike or take ferries to the islands, but it’s fine as long as you have some flexibility.

When is the cheapest time to visit Hong Kong?

If keeping costs down is your priority, don’t assume that the months with the worst weather will also be the cheapest. There’s not a guaranteed cheapest month, but May-September is generally considered a lower-demand period.

I always recommend comparing dates first so you can find the best deals on flights, and accommodation.
